These bustling underwater cities have a long history, counting their age, some even millions of years old, but they are not old-fashioned and are still colorful and lively. Come, come together in this colorful and mysterious world. What is it? The coral reef is a nitrate-sedimentary structure built from tiny animals called corals. Polyps are coelenterates that are as large as rice grains. To protect themselves, they absorb calcium and oxygen from seawater and then secrete limestone to create a hard and diverse ’house’ beneath their soft body. They come together in groups and connect the houses to form an “apartment building.” After a generation of metabolism, growth and reproduction, these limestone houses after compaction, petrochemical, formed a coral reef. The formation of a coral reef takes hundreds of years. Each coral reef is made up of millions of coral houses.
