Frozen stagnant water refers to the seasonal solid groundwater formed in the frozen zone of the aerated zone due to the freezing effect in winter. During the freezing period, the aeration zone water has obvious inverting zonation: (1) freezing the stagnant water zone; (2) the transitional moisture zone; and (3) supporting the capillary water vaporization water conveyance zone. The water-holding rate of freezing stagnant water generally increases by 20% -30% compared with that before freezing, which is equivalent to the water quantity given when the submersible water level in the aquifer with a water supply of 0.06 decreases by 2.54-3.74m. Frozen stagnant water is one of the valuable water resources for sustainable development of farming, forestry and animal husbandry in arid and semi-arid areas.
