鄂棉12号系湖北省农科院经作所于1978—1982年经远缘复合杂交选育而成的一个优良新品种。为了改变我市棉区长期大面积种植鄂沙28而使产量上不去的现状,寻求棉花高产、稳产的新良种,我市于1982年开始从省农科院经作所引进鄂棉12号,试种0.6亩,1983年继续多点示范59亩。由于鄂棉12号好拿苗,上桃快,结铃性强,后劲足,易高产稳产且品质较好,因此,近几年推广速度很快,
