A plant belonging to the Northern Ordnance Department of the Food Machinery (FMC) Company, which uses a high-power CO2 laser instead of the launch rail of a submerged-arc welded missile launcher, has realized major savings in terms of time and production costs. This is an AVCO Everett CW CO2 laser that delivers 15 kW to the workpiece, with about 85% of the power being concentrated in a millimeter-diameter beam. The 22 mm thick 1015 carbon steel butt joint of the guide rail was previously welded with a submerged arc welding. Each weld seam needs to be welded on the front surface with seven additional welds behind the shovel, thus requiring time-consuming work. Switch to laser welding after each seam
