In the past thirty years, the perspective of translation studies has shifted from language texts to the relationship between translation and social culture, that is, the influence and restriction of culture on translation. The translation has been recognized in the context of social culture and human history. This article compares two Chinese versions of Jane Eyre which are more influential in China and were born in the 1930s and 1990s, respectively. The purpose of this article is to reveal how different social and cultural environments act on translators’ choice of vocabulary.
