Catherine Bersi is a famous post-structuralist literary critic in Britain. The concept of significance is an important part of his literary criticism. Based on Saussure’s constructivist linguistics, Bessie’s theory of criticism uses Saussure’s differential theory to criticize the theory of expression and imitation, believing that language is not transparent and that the meaning of literary work does not lie in the author’s intention Reflect the objective reality. Based on this, Bersi accepts the viewpoint that can refer to materialization, expands the scope of meaning from language to symbol, emphasizes the extension and connotation of symbols (including literary works), and the meaning of connotation is not natural and eternal but from Ideological or discourse decisions, ideological changes lead to the interpretation of the meanings of literary works corresponding changes. As a result, Bessie’s concept of meaning has brought about the transformation from structuralism to post-structuralism.
