The authors systematically studied the extra-articular manifestations of 127 rheumatoid arthritis inpatients, with 35% of men and 65% of women, with an average age of 55 years and a mean duration of illness of 11.5 years. Extra-articular manifestations include: subcutaneous nodules, pulmonary fibrosis, vasculitis of the fingers, skin ulcers, enlarged lymph nodes, non-compressive neurological disorders, splenomegaly, scleral surface inflammation and pericarditis. Patients who failed to detect out-of-joint performance accounted for 24%, with an average of 76% of the extra-articular appearance, of which only one showed 34% of the total number of extra-articular manifestations and two or more had extra-articular findings
