20世纪前半期,随着以铁路为中心的新式交通体系的初成,不仅使铁路成为河南各地与沿海各通商口岸间的纽带和桥梁,也使河南铁路沿线地区的城镇体系、城乡结构、农业种植模式等发生显著变动。然而,由于人口众多和现代经济基础薄弱,加之传统思想观念浓厚,河南的城镇化发展进程较为缓慢,日渐形成了城乡“二元经济”的基本特征。
