在中国,并没有女权主义运动的背景,而1990年代初出现的“女性绘画”是作为一种立场、一种角度、一种方式而展开的,在这一时期涌现出很多的女性艺术家,引起艺术界对于女性艺术的关注高峰,为中国油画的多元发展起到了积极的作用。历史长河中,无论女性地位及艺术成就如何沉浮,很大程度上是由于不同的性别所注定的。女性意识在很大程度上决定了女性在艺术方面的成就,她们不同于男性的对生活的感受也决定了她们不同于男性的绘画方式和绘画内容。
