(一)我县从东到西长180华里,从南到北100华里,大部地区是江汉平原,东西是滨湖区,北面是丘陵地带。全县总人口91万。现有耕地205万亩,农作物以水稻、棉花为主,杂粮、油料次之,种植面积约各占三分之一。解放十年来,棉花面积是逐年扩大,产量是连年上升,植棉面积由1949年45万亩扩大到64万亩;单产出12斤(皮棉下同)提高到106斤。总产量由540万斤提高到6,784万斤。1959年比1949年增长11倍半。

The area of cotton-planting has been expanded from 450,000 mu in 1949 to 64,000 mu. The yield of 12 kg of cotton per mu has been raised to 106 kg. The total output increased from 5.4 million kg to 67.84 million kg. 1959 more than 11 and a half times that of 1949.
