The formation of 2-hydroxy estrogen is the most important pathway of human estrogen metabolism. Recently, the biological significance of a new class of catechol estrogen, 4-hydroxyestrogens, has been evaluated. It has been shown that 4-hydroxyestrogens are present in the brain of rats and humans and that it may be identified in human urine as a metabolite of naturally occurring estrogen.
