The physical characteristics of subjects can affect the auditory brain stem response (ABR) latency and amplitude. The ABR latency of adult women is shorter than that of adult men. Although some researchers consider this gender difference to be related to differences in central nervous system and brain volume, the exact mechanism remains unknown so far.
