During the Cold War, apart from vigorously developing air and sea power to guard the Strait of Masmarch and prevent the Soviet Pacific Fleet from going south, its most important onshore defensive zone was Hokkaido in the north. The post-war Soviet occupation of the four northern islands and the presence of elite air and mechanized forces posed a great threat to Japan. To this end, Japan has deployed a large number of land elite troops in Hokkaido area, including the 7th Division known as the “Tiger Sub-unit.” This article was originally published in Japan’s “PANZER” magazine. It is hypothetical that the 7th Division of Japan’s Ground Self-Defense Force fought against an equally-sized mechanized unit of the Soviet / Russian forces. Although the article is full of Japanese-style “sensationalism” statements, it is also possible to understand the tactical application of the Japanese mechanized forces from a single perspective. Perhaps the information disclosed in this article is richer and more valuable than the so-called “Mt.Fuji Fire Showcase” routinely carried out by the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force.
