A message from the World Bank excited the Chinese. January 21, 2008 The Wall Street Journal reported that World Bank President Robert Zoellick has proposed the appointment of the Chinese economist Y. Lin, the Bank’s chief economist. Lin Yifu became the first non-European and European economists to hold the post. In general, the Bank’s chief economist’s job is to set the research agenda and set the academic direction for the Bank. Most of the professors in this position are world-renowned scholars. From the 1980s to the present, chief economists were basically taught at prestigious universities in Europe and the United States until they took the post. One year after Stiglitz left his post, he won the Nobel Prize in economics in 2001.
