To promote the compilation of the Archaeology in China: Introduction and to push forward the establishment and development of the theoretical system of Chinese archaeology, the Institute of Archaeology, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, held the "Symposium of Archaeological Cultures" on 26^th August, 2003. The meeting organized discussions in the following five aspects: 1) The definition and denomination of archaeological cultures. 2) The connotation of "archaeological culture. " 3) Studies of archaeological cultures in historical times. 4) Researches on the relationship between archaeological cultures and human communities. 5) Problems existing or noteworthy in the study of archaeological cultures. The symposium brought us a further understanding of a series of theoretical problems.
