老年人是社会的宝贵财富,让他们了解家乡的历史文化、人文地理、经济建设等,可以增强他们热爱家乡的情感,激发其为家乡繁荣再做贡献的热情。2007年起,苏州市非物质文化遗产专家组成员、原苏州民间文艺家协会主席潘君明在老年大学开设了富有地方特色的乡土文化课程,以其编写的《苏州街巷文化》、《苏州楹联选赏》、《苏州话寻根》三部著作为教材授课,深得老同志们的热捧,听课学员已达7000多人次。
