Ion beam bioengineering is a new cross-disciplinary biophysics that first emerged in China. In 1986, Yu-Liang Yu, a plasma researcher at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, discovered that ion implantation has a mutagenic effect on organisms and has been successfully applied to mutation breeding.
