中原解放区位于江、淮、河、汉之间,控制着我国腹心地带河南、湖北、安徽三省。它是我军扼制国民党军北进、东进。牵制国民党军队和威胁国统区的重要战场。六万大军雄踞中原,像一只巨大的铁拳直接威胁着武汉三镇和蒋军出川的大门,对于蒋介石发动全面内战的战略意图极为不利,被其视为心腹之患。因此,中原军区的出现,使蒋介石如鲠在喉,国共两党签订的《双十协定》墨迹未干,他便调集四个战区二十多个师的兵力,向中原军区发动了声势浩大的围攻,扬言于11月份全部消灭我中原部队。
