The new expansion program at the University of California, Los Angeles campus main library includes a large-scale automated storage / retrieval system (AS / RS) capable of collecting 950000 volumes. The system is expected to save $ 13 million in funding compared to new buildings of the same capacity using a conventional bookshelf. AS / RS is a practical solution to the problem of growing collections and escalating costs of library construction. Until 2000, librarians were able to solve the problem of overcrowding when evaluating and comparing many programs for storing and retrieving data.
