袁世凯过50岁生日时,在北京大摆宴席庆祝,有人献上一副寿联: 戊戌八月,戊申八月; 我佛万年,我公万年。 “戊戌八月”,是袁世凯出卖维新派开始得势的日子,“戊申八月”(1908年)即袁世凯50岁生日。“我佛”指老佛爷慈禧太后,“我公”即指袁世凯。写寿联者为取悦袁世凯,把他与慈禧太后相提并论,不料好景不长,两个月后慈禧太后竟一命呜呼,袁世凯也被罢官免职。有人在此基础上改了三个字:
When Yuan Shikai passed his 50th birthday, he celebrated in a large banquet in Beijing. Someone presented a couplet of “Wuthering Heights” in August of 1898 and “Eun Shen in August.” The “Hundred Days of August” was the day when Yuan Shikai's betrayal of the Reformists began to gain ground. “Eun-shen August” (1908) is the 50th birthday of Yuan Shikai. “My Buddha” refers to Lafayette Empress Dowager Cixi, “My husband” means Yuan Shikai.
