Ames Research Center is developing a new long-wave infrared test set to test the focal plane performance of the Infrared Astronomy Satellite (IRAS) telescope. The device verifies the actual array in the 5-120 micron band under simulated space conditions at background levels as low as 8 × 10-6 photons / cm-2 · sec. The vast majority of tests are conducted in the main test chamber which includes liquid helium cold screens, blackbody sources, simulations of the zodiac background, and spot-scanning optics. Use an uncontaminated high vacuum pump system to evacuate the test chamber before cooling to prevent molecular settling. All auxiliary and focal plane output signals are multiplexed and digitally converted to a PDP-11/70 computer over a high-speed data transmission line. The computer in the terminal color cathode ray tube for real-time imaging, while storing data for future data collation and hard test output. This article discusses the preliminary design and performance specifications for this test setup.
