The main feature of IUD’s resistance to fertility is hindering embryo implantation. Histology of the uterus has repeatedly shown that there are abnormal cell infiltrates around the embedded IUD, often referred to as “sterile inflammatory infiltrates.” It is not yet clear whether the uterine-specific cell population is associated with the anti-fertility effects of IUD when IUD is placed.
