塔尔寺藏语称衮本,意为十万佛像,在青海省湟中县象沙尔镇西南隅。始建于明嘉靖三十九年(1560年),是格鲁派六大寺院之一。相传西藏佛教格鲁派(黄教)创始人宗喀巴出生时,其母将胞衣埋在大金瓦寺正中,后来这里长出一株菩提树,长有十万片叶子,每片叶子上现出狮子吼佛像一尊,其母本着敬爱之心,在此建立一座小塔,后人在小塔的基础上建起了高11米的大银塔,并将以后形成的寺院群落命名为塔尔寺。塔尔寺每年举行四次大法会和两次小法会,吸引了数以万计的藏、蒙、土、汉等各族的善男信女来寺瞻仰朝拜,从而使该寺成为西北地区佛教活动的中心。
