According to the 1974 report, Illinois in the United States has 16 cities and two subdivisions with barium concentrations in drinking water exceeding the tentative standard of 1 mg / l, affecting more than 150,000 people. These feeds are all taken from deep rock wells or from drilling groundwater and are affected by natural geochemical contaminants. The most typical acute effects of barium exposure in animals and humans are manifested as intense stimulation of smooth muscle, striated muscle and cardiac muscle.
