在古代奥运会的发源地——希腊奥林匹亚赫拉神庙前,有一面汇集阳光的凹面镜,希腊时间3月24日11时(北京时间17时),2008年北京奥运会圣火在这里点燃。圣火采集方式遵循古希腊的传统,由首席女祭司在赫拉神庙前朗诵致太阳神的颂词,然后通过将太阳光集中在凹面镜的中央产生高温引燃圣火。这是采集奥林匹克圣火的唯一方式。圣火点燃后,由首席女祭司在古代奥运会场内的祭坛前,点燃第一名火炬手手中的火炬,随后开始它前往奥运会主办城市的行程。
