千禧之年来临前夕的1999年12月28日上午10时许,由国家体育总局主管的原中国体育报社、新体育杂志社、中国体育杂志社和人民体育出版社合并重组的中国体育报业总社在京举行成立暨揭牌仪式。国家体育总局局长伍绍祖、副局长张发强、中宣部新闻局副局长高善罡、国家新闻出版署报刊司副司长王国庆等与国家体育总局系统各司局、各中心、各直属单位有关领导和总社全体职工出席了成立揭牌仪式。
