The entire spectrum of VLF, LF, HF, VHF, UHF spectrum as well as UHF, SHF and EHF (to be also included in the future) satellite communications are used to establish communications with units and the maritime forces. The effectiveness of the information channel in terms of required coverage, delivery speed, and amount of information is of crucial importance when choosing a transmitting medium. Additional features include security, automation, user acceptance and cost. This paper is composed of two parts: The first part summarizes the main applicable to land and sea communication system: Rohde & Schwarz naval communications equipment manufacturer Thomas A. Coadyar describes the development trend of naval communications; in the second part of this article, Norman Dr. Friedman focused on naval satellite communications.
