一般来讲,作为在现代社会中作用愈发明显的图书馆的自身职能越来越广泛,除了集知识、文化的储存、传播、推广于一体,图书馆更是成为中国社会中普遍存在的公开、免费公共空间和公共场所之一。中国的社会图书馆不仅能够为民众提供免费阅览图书、报刊以及外借各种信息资源,同时也为民众提供了社交场所以及科学研究、社会服务和文化传承的空间,成为民众交流和聚会的平台,为更好地服务教学、科研以及社会等方面起到了重要的作用。因此,图书馆更加强调公正、公平地为各民族、各文化背景的各种读者群体提供多元的服务。
