在过去的二十多年里,人们逐渐认识到菌斑是引起牙周疾病的主要致病因素。口腔医学工作者把工作重点放在预防牙周疾病的早期阶段——牙龈炎,并防止它转化成破坏性的牙周炎。要想预防牙龈炎的发生,就要彻底清除牙菌斑。许多年来学者们认为去除菌斑主要是通过机械方法,如刷牙,使用牙线等。但由于正确仔细的刷牙和使用牙线需要比较灵巧的手法和坚持的毅力,一些患者很难通过这种方式完善地控制菌斑。因而多年来一些学者提出用化学药物来作为机械清除法的补充。 早在七十年代初欧美的一些学者就开始了对一些漱口液的药理和临床实。验Le等通过对一系列有关洗必太(Chlorhexidine)的药理和临床实验的观察,认为洗必太具有明显的抑菌作用,能够抑制口腔内菌斑的形成。但由于当时洗必太制品不允许在美国应用,一些学者又致力于新制品的开发。目前比较成熟的制品是血豆根碱(Sanguinarine)、Listerne等。血豆根碱是一种植物碱,一些学者认为它具有抗菌和抗炎的作用,它能直接作用于菌斑,与菌斑结合时间可达2~4小时。Southald等
Over the past twenty years, people have come to realize that plaque is the main cause of periodontal disease.
