Objective: To investigate the effect of dexmedetomidine on the changes of stress hormones in children with snoring operation. Methods: Forty children undergoing snoring operation were divided into control group (group C) and experimental group (group D), with 20 cases in each group according to whether they were given dexmedetomidine. Before anesthesia, 2 h after skin incision, blood was taken on the first day after surgery to measure adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), cortisol and blood sugar (COR). Results: The preoperative values of ACTH and COR were not significantly different between the two groups (P> 0.05), while the ACTH and COR control groups at 2 h and 1 d after operation were significantly higher than those in the dexmedetomidine group (P < 0.05). Dexmedetomidine group also lower blood sugar than the control group, 2 h after surgery were statistically significant (P <0.05). Conclusion: Dexmedetomidine not only can be used safely in pediatric surgery, but also can significantly reduce the body’s stress response.
