鸱吻,又称鸱尾,是中国古建筑正脊两端的装饰物。《辞海》上引古代文献说:“海有鱼,虬尾似鸱,用以喷浪则降雨。汉柏梁台灾,越巫上厌胜之法,起建章宫,设鸱鱼之像于屋脊,以厌火灾,即今世鸱吻是也。”可见,在屋脊上设置鸱吻的最初用意是为避火防灾。虽然上述文献记载了从汉代起已开始使用鸱吻,但未见实物佐证。迄今发现最早的鸱吻实物,出土自唐太宗昭陵献殿遗址。
