The Wenchuan Earthquake in Sichuan once again made us feel truly that the disaster has brought tremendous impact on human society. After the sudden catastrophic catastrophe, we are still touched by the miracles of life, the rescue stories and the true human feelings that have taken place in the incident. At the same time, we are beginning to reflect deeply on what has been left behind by the disaster. Experts have long asserted that disasters are inevitable. However, to enhance people’s awareness of risk and actively adopt comprehensive precautionary measures, human beings can minimize the losses caused by disasters. Because of this, more and more attention has been paid to disaster medicine based on the research and implementation of disaster medical aid and the maximum saving of human life and safety. As an important branch of medicine, disaster medicine should move from emergency rescue to comprehensive prevention of disasters and disaster, and pay equal attention to the prevention and control of long-term medical, social and humanistic systems in the post-disaster period. Summarizing the experience of Sichuan earthquake rescue and understanding the progress of disaster medicine in the world so as to establish disaster medicine with Chinese characteristics should become an urgent task for the medical community.
