In the 1970s, countries such as Saudi Arabia, Libya, Iran, Iraq and Nigeria relied on developing their own rich oil resources to achieve rapid economic development. In fact, these countries have been developing at a relatively fast pace during the preceding decade. However, the rapid economic development of the West and Japan was unmatched by any other country before the 1950s and even a century ago. During the same period, the actual growth rate of per capita gross domestic product in the United States, Canada, Japan and most Western European countries exceeded 1%.
