Optinol announced on August 20, 2013 that the cost of producing bio-based n-butanol from various sugar sources has been comparable to that of ethanol. Unlike methods used by companies such as Gevo, Cobalt and Butamax, the Optinol process uses patented strains of non-transgenic Clostridium that are natural and abundant in favor of butanol production and do not produce acetone or ethanol. Instead of trying to change the strain to fit the existing production process, the Optinol team chose a production strategy that fits the strain.
