袁枚,字子才,清代著名的文人。曾在江宁等地做过知县。袁枚不仅文才过人,而且判案有方。《折狱奇闻》就记载了这样一个故事。江宁县有个裁缝,妻子早死,膝下只留一女。此女长得十分俊秀,且颇守妇道,每当裁缝外出,就关门闭户独自在楼上做针线活。乡里有些不肖之徒,对她垂涎三尺,但总是无机可乘。一日,裁缝外出晚归,他见自家房门大开,呼唤女儿,许久没有应声。裁缝心中诧异,急忙上楼,见女儿已惨死在凳子上。裹脚布紧紧地绑着双手,裤子褪到脚下,颈项上留有深深的掐痕,显然是被人奸污又惨遭杀害。再一看,地上还有半截人的舌头,血迹斑斑。裁缝又恨又急,一张状纸告到官府。当任县令看过现场,验尸完毕,认定凶手即断舌之人,随即签发公文,下令搜捕。很快,断舌人被缉拿归案,用刑审讯,便低头认罪,
