为提高初轧板坯成坯率,用铅试件在φ180二辊可逆轧机上,以1:9的相似比研究了扁钢锭的变形规律,分析了各主要影响因素的作用,并对“咬入返回法”、“对开单向轧制法”“大头进钢法”等初轧特殊轧制法进行了分析、比较,提出了在万能板坯初轧机上,控制轧件头尾变形,达到最小切损率的途径。在此基础上,研制了“优势法”。“优势法”与其它轧制法相比,具有在显著提高板坯成坯率的条件下,基本不影响轧机生产率的优点。经压力测定和计算,采用若干次大压下量咬头、减半压下量轧制的方法,不会引起轧机故障,最高成坯率达97.43%,比现厂一般轧法提高3.77%。
