Karen’s father had gone to work. Karen and her mother were pulling weeds in their backyard. “I hate living here,” Karen said. “I wish we had never moved to this place.” “You’re just unhappy because you miss your old friends,” Her mother said. “When the summer vacation’s over, you’ll make lots of new friends in your new school.” Karen sighed. They had been living in their new house for almost a week, and so far the only new “friend” she had made was pesky little Brandon, the five-year-old boy who lived next door. The telephone rang, and Karen’s mother went inside the house to answer it. As Karen tugged at the stubborn weeds around a bush, she noticed a colorful little rock half-buried in the ground. She pushed the loose dirt aside. It wasn’t a rock at all but a ring -- a turquoise stone mounted in a delicate setting of lacy silver.
