In 1998, the WSPA Water Quality Group conducted a survey on drinking water disinfection of large and medium-sized water plants with surface water and groundwater as sources of water and serving more than 10,000 people of medium and large scale after a survey conducted in 1979 and 1989 . The results show that chlorine or hypochlorite is still the preferred disinfectant. The use of alternatives to chlorine, such as chloramines, chlorine dioxide and ozone, is gradually increasing.
