常熟是经国务院批准的国家历史文化名城,不仅历史悠久,可以追溯到商周时期(常熟之虞山即相传为纪念周太王(古公亶父)的二儿子虞仲,他因让位而避奔江南,死于此而命名),而且文化源远流长。尤其在明末清初,常熟文化中的虞山诗派、虞山画派,严徵的琴学,钱谦益的诗歌,王翚、吴历的山水画,毛晋的私人刻书,瞿氏铁琴铜剑楼的藏书,等等,都达到了全国的一流水平。当代的常熟文化界,
