In the 1960s a small class of channel-type electron multipliers with continuous dynodes, high gain, low noise and no fear of exposure to the atmosphere emerged. This solid and lightweight device is primarily used as a charged particle detector for space research and laboratory spectroscopy. Due to its windowless construction, it is particularly suitable for the detection of low-energy electrons and is currently used in a wide range of electronic spectrometers.
