科技编辑报道是科学技术领域中的一个独立门类。传统上,我国把科技编辑报道当作科技情报工作的一个组成部分,作为情报工作的一“环”。这表明,科技编辑报道工作在科技领域还没有它应有的位置。把科技编辑报道工作当作情报工作的组成部分,当然是出于情报工作的需要,但这样正如“把‘科学情报工作’概念的范围缩小为对科研人员的一种技术性服务,却意味着贬低了这项工作的社会地位,无助于吸收有才华的人们参加到科学工作的这个领域里来,从而对改善科学情报工作和增进情报理论和方法的研究产生不良的影响。(《科学交流与情报学》科技文献出版社1980年版P263)由于没有把编辑报道工作的位置摆正,不但影响到科技编辑报道工作本身理论和方法的发展,而旦使人们对科技编辑报道工作
