Hamilton Bros and BHP developed a gravity-based conservation island for Arctic ice floes at 50 m depth. It is a rectangular concrete or steel protective structure with an open area in the middle, measuring 110 m by 120 m. The structure is ballasted to the seafloor during the ice-free period and remains in place until the formation of the ice floe in winter.
