New Orleans, The United States of America: A protein released by choroidal scarring after laser photocoagulation may be the cause of inhibition of new blood vessels in the diabetic eye. The results of the 1987 study presented at the American Academy of Ophthalmology explain why laser treatment can prevent the development of diabetic retinopathy. This finding can also lead to more effective treatment of other diseases that play a key role in neovascularization, including premature retinopathy, macular degeneration, sickle cell retinopathy, tumor growth and rheumatoid arthritis.
