Objective To study the relationship between matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and breast cancer. Methods Literature review was used to review the expression and significance of matrix metalloproteinase in breast cancer. Results Under normal conditions, the matrix metalloproteinases and tissue inhibitors in humans maintained an equilibrium state. In many studies in vitro and in vivo, it was found that many matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) have enhanced expression in breast cancer. Conclusion The growth, invasion and metastasis of breast cancer are closely related to the expression of matrix metalloproteinases and their inhibitors. Matrix metalloproteinases may be a new valuable prognostic indicator of breast cancer. Matrix metalloproteinase inhibitors are expected to become promising therapeutic agents for breast cancer.
