John Thomson (John Thomson June 14, 1837 - October 7, 1921) was born in Edinburgh, England. Came to China twice in 1862 and 1869. Has been to Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Taiwan, Shantou, Xiamen, Fuzhou, Shanghai, Ningbo, Nanjing, Guizhou, Tianjin, Beijing and other places, travel nearly 8000 km. He used his lens to faithfully record the late Qing China that was forced to open its door to China after five trade talks. In 1872 Thomson ended his trip to the Far East to return.
