Proposing a single concept may partially solve two of North America’s major problems: the concept of converting an uneconomical sulfate pulp mill into a wood-ethanol plant. While this new process is well developed for the treatment of wood, which may be the hardest but most abundant source of cellulosic material, we believe these “re-planned” kraft pulp plants are able to successfully use a variety of plant cellulose Raw materials, including a variety of agricultural raw materials and residues in China. Two major issues are: the future supply and cost of petroleum transportation fuels and the potential impact of fossil fuels on global climate change; and North American pulp and paper companies have long been in financial woes due to overcapacity.
