担经挑是盛行于河南周口东部——淮阳的一种民间巫舞,据文献显示,约成于商朝,甚至可推测至更早,周武王时期基本确立。担经挑随着历史的发展逐渐完善,到宋代,由于市民音乐的出现和等级制度的破坏担经挑逐渐在民间盛行。担经挑的功能随着历史的变化而变化,在巫文化时期主要用于求子、祭祀,随着历史的发展担经挑的功能也逐渐的增加。不再是以往的祭祀、求子等,更多的加入了娱人的功能。
