Kjell Hatteland and Morten Eriksen, PhD, of the Oslo Institute of Surgery in Norway recently developed a new heterodyne Doppler blood flow velocity meter. This instrument, known as UNlDOP, can operate at two frequencies and two modes of operation: it can operate at 6MHz and at 1.5MHz; it can work both in a pulsed mode and in a continuous wave mode. The UNlDOP Doppler flowmeter can be used to measure superficial blood vessels below 2.5 cm at 6 MHz; the probe depth at 1.5 MHz is greater than 10 cm and can be used to measure deeper blood vessels and the heart.
