编辑,是在人类社会历史发展过程中产生和发展起来的一种特殊的社会工作。由于社会经济、文化的不断发展,科学技术的不断进步,产生了整理文字记录和汇集、传递信息等编辑活动,并在编辑活动的实践基础上,发展成为一种独特的社会分工一一编辑工作。到了近代,尤其是在所谓的信息时代的现代,对编辑工作不断提出更高的要求。为适应科学文化发展的需要,编辑工作也在不断发展、创新的过程中,逐步探索到一些自身的规律,形成一门独立的学科——编辑学。
