This article compares CBM potential of five Hercynian forerunner basins distributed in Germany and the United Kingdom with coal seam methane potential in the Black Warrior coal-bearing basin of Alabama, USA. Although these foreland basins in Europe generally have similar geological conditions to the BlackWarrior basin, the former have thicker coal series, more coal seams, and a greater net coal seam thickness. This paper also compares coal rank, present coal methane content, potential gas production depth, and history after coalification. Although there are many similarities between basins and basins, the potential for methane production in coal seams depends primarily on the respective characteristics of the basins. It seems that there is only prospect for coal-bed methane exploration in the untreated areas of the East Ruhr Basin and western South Wales Basin. Both of these areas have significant exploration risks for potential good economic benefits. The Oxford and Kent basins do not seem to have the prospect of coal-bed methane exploration. Due to the lack of methane content data and experiencing strong tectonic extrusion, the prospect of methane potential in the coal seam of the Bristol-Somerset Basin is not optimistic. The Stephanian-Permian surface layering and erosion during the Early Triassic may have undermined the methane potential of coal seams in the Oxford, Kent and Bristol-Somerset basins. This article has not been evaluated for the Euphrates Basin in Belgium and France.
